“With our 3G service, almost any spot in a city is a hot spot,” said Ralph de la Vega, chief operating officer for Cingular Wireless. “BroadbandConnect complements our national high-speed EDGE data service, offering customers the flexibility and ubiquity required to be more productive as the world continues to go wireless.”

In a move to compete with Verizon, Cingular Wireless Latest News about Cingular today launched its third-generation wireless Business Communication Tools from Sprint network.

The new service is called Cingular BroadbandConnect, and is available to nearly 35 million throughout the United States. The company said it would continue to extend the network rapidly next year.

“Make no mistake about it: Wireless users want the speed and services they’ve come to expect from their wired connections. And today Cingular is delivering on its promises to provide both the speed and reliability customers need,” said Stan Sigman, Cingular’s president and CEO, at an investor conference in New York City.

Everywhere’s a Hot Spot

Cingular said its 3G Latest News about 3G network is the first widely available service in the world to use HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology. HSDPA is the high-speed evolution of GSM/EDGE (Global System for Mobile Communication/Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution), which shares a common core network.

Cingular will initially launch the BroadbandConnect service in Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Portland, Ore., Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Calif., Seattle, Tacoma, Wash., and Washington D.C.

Exclusive Services Coming

Cingular said said when coupled with a compatible device and service plan, the service provides average mobile data Latest News about mobile data connections between 400-700Kbps (kilobits per second) on the downlink and bursts to more than a megabit per second.

BroadbandConnect combines a laptop modem card, Cingular’s Communication Manager software Get your FREE Oracle Database Software Kit today! and a Data Connect plan for use on laptops. Customers can use their laptops to access the Internet Get Linux or Windows Managed Hosting Services with Industry Leading Fanatical Support. or e-mail, download large files and attachments, and run corporate business applications at broadband speeds in areas covered by BroadbandConnect.

Additional devices and exclusive services that take advantage of the high-speed HSDPA network, such as transmitting full motion video and providing ultra-fast audio, will be available in 2006.

Calling for New Phones

Burton Group Senior Analyst Mike Disabato told TechNewsWorld that the laptop modem cards, which retail for about US$100, are fine but the industry needs to focus on phones that work with the high-speed wireless networks.

“The biggest issue I have with the U.S. carriers in general is that this neat stuff gets announced and then we don’t see it for a year and a half. I go to Europe and they are already using it,” Disabato said. “So they need to cut down the time to market in getting the handsets out that not only look cool but work with the full range of data speeds.”

Competing with WiFi and WiMax

Analysts said Verizon and Cingular have more to worry about that just competing with one another. They also have to look over their shoulder at WiFi Latest News about WiFi, WiMax and 802.16e.

The sooner the high-speed networks are in place with embedded customers, the better the carriers will be able to fend off WiMax and WiFi hotspots, according to Disabato. But that is not the only challenge.

“The carriers need to make sure that in high-density locations, like airports, they are sufficiently provisioned to prevent the cells from saturating or it will slow everyone down,” Disabato said. “In that case, you may not be able to get a connection at all.”

In a presentation to investors last month, Motorola revealed brief details and a photo of the ROKR E2 handset, one of the company’s upcoming music phones with iTunes integration.

The capsule shape phone was shown in black, featuring a dedicated iTunes music key and track-ball-like navigational pad. Unlike the ROKR E1, which is was based on a candy-bar form-factor, the ROKR E2 appears to sport Motorola’s PEBL industrial design.

According to a brief description included in the presentation, the ROKR E2 will feature a Bluetooth stereo headset and “rapid USB2-enabled downloads.” The handset is also expected to feature a “richer mobile music experience” and support for UMTS — a 3G mobile system news and information provider.

The ROKR E2 fits a different description than the handset recently described by BusinessWeek as being the successor to the ROKR E1. In a recent report, the publication said Motorola plans to introduce a revamped version of the ROKR in the first quarter of 2006, updated to address the main criticisms of the first release.

“Expect a phone with a 1 megapixel camera, a 3.5 millimeter earphone jack (same as the iPod uses), and enough storage capacity to hold 1,000 songs — all capabilities Motorola has confirmed,” the report said. “The current phone’s basic design will be replaced by a sleek new look, which sources close to the company say will be an elegant slider format.”

At least two other upcoming Motorola handset will include support for iTunes according to reports circulating on the Internet. Pre-production models of Motorola’s SLVR L7 handset were recently spotted with iTunes, Bluetooth headset support, a VGA digital camera, and a TransFlash memory card. Meanwhile, photos of a RAZR2 prototype also reveal plans for iTunes integration.

Despite a lackluster response to the original ROKR E1 iTunes handset by reviewers and the media, Motorola recently said that it shipped over half-a-million of the phones since they were introduced in September.

The SLV140 is a triband GSM phone with UTMS support and has some features that make it a tad bit nicer than the RAZR. Some of these include a 2-megapixel camera, video calling, and a 2.2-inch 262k color screen. Not too bad. It’s got an overall design very similar to the RAZR, right down to the all-silver coating. You can even expand storage via microSD. No word on when it’s going to be released or how much it will cost.

Just as camera phones were the rage in 2004, music phones are the new battleground for manufacturers as evident with the Motorola ROKR, Samsung SCH-A950 and LG CE500. As each company releases their music phones, each hopes to grasp a hold on the fledgling market with the right mix of functionality, style, and accessibility.

Hitting store shelves this month, the W600i is the latest Sony Ericsson device to encapsulate music and mobility, leveraging the heritage of its parent companies to demonstrate their combined vision. Branding the W-series devices as “Walkman Phones,” the W600i delivers an open-standard-based digital music player for the mass market.

Through the packaged Sony CONNECT software, downloaded songs and music copied from CD can be directly transferred to the W600i. Able to handle multiple file formats including MP3 and AAC, the W600i includes Disc2Phone PC software for convenient music transfer.

The Sony Ericsson W600i combines multimedia and functionality with mobility, allowing users to take calls while listening to music, capture high-quality 1.3-megapixel images and video, experience 3D gaming, and access the Internet and email, all while on the move.

News from Nokia is the 6282, a slider 3G phone made—GASP—for the US market! Based on a phone of the same name for Europe and Asia, it also supports WCDMA 1900 and GSM 850 networks which should be online in our mighty country by early next year. So, as well as enabling all 3G services, you’ll also get a 2.2-inch display, 1 megapixel camera (which really doesn’t make much sense, but ok), FM radio, digital music player with hot-swappable miniSD card support and Bluetooth technology. So what does 3G mean to you? Right now, imagine things like streaming multimedia audio and video content and the rapid upload and download of large files—including downloadable games and video, MP3 or AAC ringtones, or over-the-air synchronization of calendar, contact and to-do information using the built-in SyncML client. Oddly enough, there’s no price as of yet. Maybe they’re waiting for the network to actually run first.

The carrier introduced the Sony Ericsson W600i, flip phone that features a WalkMan Media Player with 256 MB of memory and a 1.3-megapixel camera. The quad-band handset is Bluetooth-compatible and sells for $199 after a mail-in rebate.

Cingular is the first U.S. operator to sell the handset, which launched in Europe several weeks ago.

The new, media-centric phone competes with Motorola’s Rokr E1, the so-called iTunes phone that has received tepid reviews since its September launch. The candybar-style Rokr, which is currently exclusive through Cingular, sells for $150 and allows users to store up to 100 songs with an included memory card.

Motorola’s resurgence has moved eastwards – to India. The company is finally trying to make a strong push and capture a bigger portion of the fast growing Indian cellular market. Over pst few years, it has been such an also ran, miles behind Nokia, Samsung and LG – that it is no surprise that no one took them seriously. But things changed this week. Earlier, the company teamed up with one of the sister companies of Bharti Telecom, in an effort to get better distribution in the Indian hinterlands.

Today the company announced a series of new handsets, including world premiere of “L6?, a candy stick version of the Moto RAZR. (Sweet looking phone!) According to my reports, the demand for RAZR is so strong right now, that the phone is now commanding upwards of $300. It also set-up a manufacturing (read assembly plant) in India. This is all adding up to the main event: Motorola’s bid for upcoming upgrades of the BSNL, a state-owned network.

Bidding for this network could get fierce since Huawei is pretty much out of the process over security concerns. Ericsson is the other likely bidder for this massive build-out project. Whether it will make any money for Motorola remains to be seen. Ask Nortel, which is seemingly trying to back out of a money losing deal with the company. (Ironically, Sunil Mittal, who started Bharti Telecom, wants government to divest from BSNL and estimates it at $30 billion. Of course he wants to make this as his bid for the prime minister’s office in the near future.)
