The number of devices shipped with built-in Bluetooth capabilities has doubled since May, according to the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).

The trade group said that about 9.5 million Bluetooth-enabled devices such as cell phones were shipped each week in September. That figure was 4.75 million units per week in May, the group said.

Acceptance of Bluetooth for short-range wireless transmissions is expected to grow with the SIG’s agreement last week to incorporate a one-time competing technology, ultra-wideband, into the Bluetooth specification. The group indicated last week that it intended to have that integration complete by 2007.

The SIG said the shipment figures were provided by IMS Research.
